Just found this tribe and happy to be here...
Been picking up a few DVDs lately (Cremaster, LaMonte Young, Polanski) for viewing on my PC but am intending to invest in a region-free DVD player soon - Once I do I will want to get the complete Tarkovsky on DVD (I've seen all his feature films at least once, never seen 'Steamroller & Violin' though)
Has any DVD company had the grace and integrity to release a box set of Tarkovsky's films? If not, can anyone recommend a good online (or SF Bay Area) source for Tarkovsky DVDs at the best prices? - I see Amoeba in SF has all of them (new copies) but I'd buy online if I knew who has the best prices - Thanks...

Tue, January 11, 2005 - 11:56 AMi noticed Stalker at tower records was marked "standard". Dont know if it was shot that way or if it's also available widescreen. Anybody? -

There is a criterion version with widescreen - i think it was filmed in CinemaScope.

Wed, March 23, 2005 - 12:57 PMStalker on DVD. I broke down and picked it up. I have one complaint -- the compression destabilizes the image at times. What a drag. The audio though is fantastic. I'm sure there will be a better release at some point. In the meantime though, get it. it's stalker... can you beat it? -

Re: Tarkovsky on DVD
Wed, March 23, 2005 - 1:35 PMHow much did you pay for the DVD of Stalker? I saw one recently at a local Barnes & Noble for I think $50, but for disc that's not immaculately mastered that's a hefty chunk of change. (plus, I'm poor right now)

Re: Tarkovsky on DVD
Mon, March 28, 2005 - 2:26 PMyou can get stalker for about $30 from a 3d party seller on amazon.
i would implore people to buy from 3d party sellers anyway (check the feedback if it makes you nervous) as, although our dear government would like us to believe unemployment has gone down (sort of), it probably hasnt-- they dont even count the people who need to make a living via selling online (need vs want, although want also figures in. the people who want to make a living online arent counted either. at any rate) & it is a difficult way to do business. less profit than one thinks.
at any rate, redux, we watched solaris again last night (the new, not the old) &, once again, it was phenomenal (phenomenologic-al)-- i have not seen the remake & really do not intend to-- i wonder if it contains any of the abovenoted phenomenology or if it has been reduced, via market pressure, to scenes of sex & dwarves-- well, maybe not dwarves --sex & space travel.
i can but only imagine. -
