I'm sure I could look it up, but I thought I'd work on invigorating this tribe. I'm asking because of the comments by the postman made in The Sacrifice. Does anyone know?

Did anybody see both the Tarkovsky version and the Soderbergh/Clooney remake of Solaris? Tho' I very much like Soderbergh's work, I'm kinda reluctant to go and see his remake of Solaris, since for me Tarkovsky's version is such a masterpiece... being a bit of a whimp here :-)

Rublev BFI book

Just picked this pocket BFI (British Film institute) book on Rublev... just started it but i recomend you pick it up because I can see this one going out of print like everything tarkovsky. These books are nice because they give a wide screen pictures of different segments they are writing about. The Thin Red Line one is gorgeous...beautiful repro
I picked up the book of Tarkovskys polaroids (Incredibly beautiful!!!) from amazon UK and it is gone.OOP ..New release of it coming out from an italian publisher. look for info on MASTERSofCinema.com A truly amazing web site...
that's alll for now ...hope to get the juices flowing in this most important tribe!! By the way just saw malick's "The New World" See it now cuz Malick is reportedly cutting 20 minutes out of it... It has Colin farrel (worst of our generation) but it's still malick right?!

Anybody here a fan?

I'm a huge tarkovsky fan, but Satan Tango has to be my all time favorite. seen it 3 times, once in berlin, once at its sf film fest debut, and once during a retro. may be the only californian to have seen it 3x? it's 8.5 hours long.

anybody else had the fortune of seeing it?

or werkmeister harmonies, his next film. in keeping w/ tarkovsky's use of long tracking shots, time told through the scene rather than through montage.

..

nice to have found this tribe.

Tarkovsky on DVD

Just found this tribe and happy to be here...

Been picking up a few DVDs lately (Cremaster, LaMonte Young, Polanski) for viewing on my PC but am intending to invest in a region-free DVD player soon - Once I do I will want to get the complete Tarkovsky on DVD (I've seen all his feature films at least once, never seen 'Steamroller & Violin' though)

Has any DVD company had the grace and integrity to release a box set of Tarkovsky's films? If not, can anyone recommend a good online (or SF Bay Area) source for Tarkovsky DVDs at the best prices? - I see Amoeba in SF has all of them (new copies) but I'd buy online if I knew who has the best prices - Thanks...

Nostalgia, and The Stalker

Turner Classic Movies I guess still does this (like it did back a few years when I had cable), by showing 5 or so of Tarkovsky's films in a relatively short time (they did this in one night, e.g.)?

Anyways, among them I also recorded Nostalgia, and The Stalker (two different films).

Has anyone else here seen them?

VERY different from each other and his others, as far as I can tell, as well as from anything else...!

Marvelous!!!!

you will most likely enjoy Andrei Zvyagintsev "The Return"
I really don't want to spend on the KINO version...

The movie itself is incredible...truly a masterpiece.

Maybe I should have called this tribe "Russian Symbolistic Cinema" or something along those lines... Alexander Sokurov (http://sokurov.spb.ru/island_en/mnp.html) is another director well worth mentioning. Unfortuately his work is rather difficult to access in the US :-( His movie Days of Eclipse is an amazing piece of art. Another fine example is Sergei Paradjanov (http://www.hal-pc.org/~questers/PARADJANOV.html).

This is my favorite by Tarkovsky.

It's a bit hard to follow, due to editing, but it's a very primal movie.
